HP has recently pushed a firmware update (version code 20201021) for the LaserJet 202A / 202X / 204A / 204X that will prevent you from using most compatible cartridges, including the following SW items:
- PTCF500A/501A/502A/503A
- PTCF500X/501X/502X/503X
- PTCF510A/511A/512A/513A
- PLCF500X/501X/502X/503X
While it appears the firmware won’t be upgraded automatically, should you or your customers initiate an upgrade, or buy one of the affected models manufactured in November 2020 and beyond, they may experience a “Supply Memory Error” message when using non-OEM cartridges, and the printer will cease printing.
If you or your customer has already installed the update, here is some information on how to downgrade to a previous version. (video / PDF)
Disable Automatic Firmware Updates
While it may seem that keeping your device’s firmware up-to-date is a no-brainer, automatically updating allows OEMs to push code designed to force you to use their overpriced cartridges.
We recommend turning off automatic updates and not choosing to update firmware unless the manufacturer announces a critical system update.
To turn off automatic updates:
- From the home screen, select SETUP
- Select SERVICE
- Select LASERJET UPDATE
- Select MANAGE UPDATES
- Select CHECK AUTOMATICALLY
- Select OFF then select HOME to return to the home screen
